Blitzkrieg 2 is an evolution of its predecessor, a World War II RTS with impressive graphics but fundamental gameplay issues. The game does improve over the original, with a new graphics engine and more campaigns scattered across different territories of the world. Players can choose between the Russian, American and German sides in a variety of missions that span the five years from Operation Barbarossa to the capture of Berlin. More than 250 authentic units, each modeled after its real-world counterpart, are available to command.

The move to a 3D engine is clearly evident as soldiers, vehicles and tanks roll across the battlefield. There's a great level of detail in the battlefields, with snow covered fields showing footprints and tread marks from vehicles, and destructible environments that allow tanks to rip through buildings and knock down walls. The explosions of artillery fire are especially impressive, causing buildings to crumble and ash to fall as the blast waves sweep through the landscape.

The campaign mode is a major improvement over the original. While many of the same problems remain -- unlimited reinforcements tend to result in long games that devolve into dull defensive dances as each player tries to wall up behind a stack of armor -- a more focused battle system provides an enjoyable twist on battlefield tactics, with a premium placed on unit position and height, and a need for combined arms strategies.
